Chiropractors for decades have been associated with helping patients who come in with back pain and backaches, and for good reason! We have been so successful at the detection of the cause and treatment of back (spinal) pain.
One of the most common causes of back pain is related to spinal misalignment. When a vertebra misaligns due to trauma, falls, sports injuries, car accidents, etc. or weakens from degeneration or lack of movement, the nerves which exit the spine (there are 31 pairs) can come tractioned, compressed, pinched, irritated or even inflamed. The associated back pain can range from a dull ache, which causes pain when sitting, to a very sharp and electrical pain which commonly travels down the leg.
Most times, the patient is feeling the results of the disk (a cartilage pad between each vertebra) “slipping”, bulging or herniating which puts pressure on the actual spinal nerve. This pressure not only causes pain but actually decreases the function of the nerve creating an interference of normal function.
With the use of x-ray and careful examination, these misalignments (called subluxations) can be detected and corrected by a chiropractor. This correction process is called an adjustment. The very first appointment typically takes approximately one hour – so that an x-ray can be taken – leading to the next step where I can learn about your history and make a careful examination. Your second visit takes about 20 minutes so that I can explain specific challenges and needs as well as discuss how chiropractic care can help you with your back pain and many other issues. Then ongoing, most appointments take no longer than 10-15 minutes.
Every patient and situation is different, depending on age, relative health habits, lifestyle, genetic and history of trauma. I look at all of these factors when developing a course of treatment for you.
Chiropractors are very successful treating back pain – without involving drugs or surgery or their side effects – not to mention time and cost.
If you suffer from back pain, don’t continue to suffer. Call my office at 203-397-7767 and make an appointment. No one deserves to be in pain every day – especially when back pain is treatable.
